About this experience
The venerable German city with ancient Roman and French influences impresses with its age and strict wisdom, which can be read in its streets, squares, and building facades. You will learn about the history of Germany's oldest temple, built under Emperor Constantine, trace the key epochs of the city, and discover how its appearance has changed over time.
What to expect
Older than Rome by 300 years
We will start the tour with the Porta Nigra, or the Black Gate - the city's main symbol, where I will talk about the traces of ancient Roman presence. In the Simeonstift Museum, you will trace the key epochs of Trier and learn about the notable French influence on its culture. On the way to the Market Square, where we will discuss the bustling medieval trade life, you will explore House of the Three Kings - one of the few surviving fortress houses in Germany. Visit the expressive Main Market Square with its main jewel - a fountain dedicated to Saint Peter and the Four Virgins. Also, admire another adornment of Trier - the graceful Red House.
Iconic Churches of Trier
You will also get acquainted with the oldest church in Germany - Trier Cathedral, which was built by the order of Emperor Constantine just a couple of years after the legalization of Christianity. You will learn how its appearance has changed over the centuries and what relics are stored in it. You will also visit the Church of Our Lady (Liebfrauenkirche), the second most important church in Trier, where you will see the richly decorated interior and appreciate the beauty of the Baroque-style Saint George Fountain.
Trier is the hometown of Karl Marx, so there is a museum in his honor in the city. You can visit it on your own; I will provide you with the address.
