Newcomer: Munich Architecture of the XXI Century

Architects implementing modern urban planning projects in the heart of the Bavarian metropolis face a challenging task. Historical buildings should by no means appear illogical or 'lost' against the backdrop of new structures! Prominent Munich and global architects integrate historical objects into contemporary buildings. Unique complexes with a special concept have emerged in the city. Techniques of blending elements of old structures with new construction are employed, giving Munich's modern architecture a distinctive appearance.

Program

Explore some of the most interesting architectural sites that have emerged in Munich in the early 21st century:

• The famous passages of '5 Höfe' in the city center. Hanging vines from the ceiling and vibrant modern life hidden in secret courtyards await. Witness unique artistic perspectives and learn about the architects' vision that incorporates dozens of unconventional details into the space.
• The urban courtyard combined with the building of a former publishing house and printing press of a well-known German newspaper. Inside, numerous modern bars, cafes, shops... Rarely visited by tourists, it is a meeting point for locals and fashionable individuals. The complex even includes residential apartments, with a museum of urban subculture nearby.
• A place that used to be a grain warehouse a hundred years ago. In the early 21st century, it housed Munich's most famous delicatessen store. Now it exudes an Italian spirit. The building's story is complex and unusual, reflecting Munich's tradition of blending old and new in architecture.
• New residential buildings erected in the heart of the city where space is scarce and land is incredibly expensive. We will discuss the purpose behind developing residential properties in the historical center and the urban planners' vision. An example is the prestigious residential complex and loft apartments built on the site of a former thermal power station.
• A multi-story garage proving the utility of repurposing an ancient building. From its roof, you can enjoy a bird's eye view of the Old Town.
