About this experience
In the middle of the 20th century, local architects in Armenia developed an interest in modernism. They enthusiastically embraced it, giving it an Armenian accent and poetic touch. This led to monumental projects and an environment for bold ideas. Traveling through Yerevan and nearby cities, you will uncover the legacy of that era, compare different artistic movements, and learn to understand them.
What to Expect
Yerevan is an improvisational city. In the architecture of the capital, you can hear classical music, modern arrangements, and variations on the theme of modernism. On a guided walking tour of Yerevan, you will discover the ancient city from a new perspective:
- Witness how masters boldly combined reinforced concrete structures with national accents,
- Understand that modernism can harmoniously coexist with national architecture,
- Learn how Armenian modernism was born in architectural disputes between 'fathers and sons,'
- Find out why ambitious youth with daring engineering projects emerged victorious,
- See that the dream of every Armenian was embedded in the design of the cinema theater by the architects.
In the first part of the tour, we will stroll around the city, descend into the metro, and decode hidden architectural symbols. We will visit the Cascade. I will explain how modern Yerevan is closely connected to the most tender and poetic theme for Armenians—the Mount Ararat.
Next, we will visit the memorial complexes of Tsitsernakaberd and Sardarapat, learn the history of their creation, unravel the architecture of memory, see how simple geometric architectural forms are complex in execution and interesting in content. The small town of Echmiadzin will surprise you not only with the Cathedral but also with unexpected forms in the architecture of modern churches.
Instead of Echmiadzin, we can head to Lake Sevan, where you will ascend to an observation platform and learn how an architect, 30 years ahead of his time, built two modern buildings, combining two directions in one architectural complex.
