About this experience
The desert conceals many wonders, antiquities, and marvels. How did the remains of whales, extinct millions of years ago, end up in the hot sands? Why is only a fifth of the huge freshwater lake with crocodiles left? How did this lake form in the desert? We have the answers to your questions! But first, let's show you what the sands hide - the mysteries of Ancient Egypt are available only to those who seek them.
What to expect
- Fayoum Oasis. In ancient times, it was called the Egyptian garden - back then, the oasis was much larger than it is today. Pharaoh Amenemhat about 4000 years ago ordered the artificial digging of a lake, which was filled with water from the Nile and was called Meridova.
- Salt Lake Karun - the fifth part of the ancient Egyptian Meridova lake. In ancient times, crocodiles lived on its shores, which were worshipped by the locals. Even the city of Shedet, located on the lake's shore, was called Crocodilopolis because of this. Honouring the past, crocodiles are still bred today but only in certain water bodies.
- Wadi Al-Hitan (Whale Valley) - a remote area in the Western Desert of Egypt with a priceless collection of fossilized bones of ancient whales, called archaeocetes. The age of the skeletons is at least 50 million years. You will learn how the whale remains ended up in the desert, as well as when and by whom they were discovered.
- On the way to Whale Valley, we will stop to admire the Wadi Al-Rayan Waterfall. And then we will go have tea in the Bedouin village.
