About this experience
Some call Skopje the world capital of kitsch with a shocking amount of sculptures, while others are captivated by its bridges. Either way, the conflicting views on its appearance do not negate the great history behind the Balkan old-timer, who has witnessed wars, cataclysms, epidemics, and changes of empires. Let's talk about how Skopje's complex destiny shaped its culture on a walk through the center.
What to Expect
An unusual open-air museum city
In focus will be the cultural mosaic of Skopje and the harmony established between the Old Town, the Ottoman period, and the New Town, which has not lost its Christian traditions. Along the way, I will also tell you how other periods of history have influenced the life of the state that was part of Ancient Macedonia, the Roman and Byzantine Empires.
You will visit the largest bazaar on the Balkans - Old Bazaar. Walk through Golden and other craft streets. See where the construction of Skopje began. Peek into the 'bezisten' covered market, visit the caravanserai housing the women's medrese, a hookah lounge, and a beer bar. Hear the story of the Kale Fortress. And in the New Town, I will introduce you to the Skopje 2014 project - an open-air museum, show you the Civilisation and Art Bridges, and the medieval Stone Bridge - the postcard of the Macedonian capital.
Additionally, on the walk, you will find out where the actual house where Mother Teresa was born is located.
