In three hours you will get acquainted with the main symbols of Tirana, learn about the Turkish conquerors and the revival of religious freedom, be amazed by the despotic rule of Europe's last 'Stalinist', Enver Hoxha, and hear about his famous bunkers. You will also discover what the dynamic, well-kept, and cozy capital lives on today.
What to expect
Iconic Et'hem Bey Mosque
The walk will start from the central square of Tirana – Skanderbeg Square, where I will tell you about Albania's national hero. You will visit an important symbol of the country – the famous 18th-century Et’hem Bey Mosque, near which we will talk about its key role in the revival of the state's religious freedom. And special attention will be paid to the frescoes depicting rare motifs for Islamic architecture, such as trees, waterfalls, bridges, and divine feasts.
Astounding Tirana bunkers
The tour will also feature stories about the incredible number of bunkers that Albania was packed with in the middle of the last century by the revolutionary and Europe's last 'Stalinist', Enver Hoxha. Imagine that in a country with an area of about 30,000 square kilometers and a population of three million people, over 700,000 bunkers were built, which were never used. We will talk about the reasons for such strange decisions and other actions of the communist leader of Albania during the walk.
Main Boulevard and Blloku Quarter
Also, in the historical center, you will see government and public buildings – the Parliament, Congress Palace, National Gallery, and the University of Mother Teresa. I will briefly talk about the history of Tirana's development from its foundation in the early 17th century to the present day – we will discuss medieval trade routes, Turkish conquerors, the socialist period, and modernity. The walk will end in the former district for nomenklatura workers, where Enver Hoxha's house has been preserved. Here, you can stay for the evening, as the quarter is famous for its nightlife, modern restaurants, cafes, and clubs.
