About this experience
Authentic, hospitable, and lively, Santiago will captivate you with its picturesque streets, dozens of churches, squares, and mansions. Immerse yourself in the cheerful baroque fairy tale of the Old Town, explore the Cathedral of St. James, taste Galician delicacies at the central market, and understand what attracts more than three hundred thousand pilgrims to this city annually.
What to Expect
Historical Curiosities and Adventures
You will learn how the cult of the relics of St. James originated and why settlers from all over Europe flocked to the growing city surrounding the cathedral. Also: how a fictional battle with the Moors provided Santiago with the most stable and wealthy treasury among all the cities in Spain, how in the 15th century 'charter' trips were invented for pilgrims, and why a priceless handwritten 'guidebook' from the 12th century ended up in the attic of an electrician in our time.
Exploring the Depths of the Old Town
The intricate network of alleyways and secret passages will captivate us for a good two hours. During this time, you will see a 'fake' house consisting of only one wall and an active monastery where 40 Benedictine nuns live and work. Additionally: centuries-old taverns, vegetable gardens in the city center, the university rectorate, and the square that once served as a cemetery and is now a venue for music festivals.
Santiago from Within
I will share with you how to climb the cathedral roof, where to try traditional dishes, how to visit the hotel of the Catholic kings, and even stay for free in one of its rooms. Additionally, you will learn where you can go from Santiago and which museums are worth visiting.
Organizational Details
Please note: the visit to the cathedral is not included in the program, and only museum guides are allowed to conduct tours inside. But I will gladly give you a brochure prepared by me, which will orient you during independent sightseeing and will remain as a souvenir.
- I will meet you at the hotel or rental apartment, and after the tour, if desired, I can escort you to a place you like or back home.
- It is better to go on the tour in comfortable shoes, dressed for the weather, and equipped with a camera and a small bottle of water.
- Additional expenses may await you only at the Abastos market if you wish to taste fresh oysters or sample Galician wine and vermouth.
