About this experience
This tour is for those who are preparing for their first encounter with Madrid: I will make it memorable and reveal the essence of the Spanish capital. You will trace Madrid's historical path (the depth of immersion depends on your interest) and explore must-see places such as squares, the Royal Palace, Sabatini Gardens, Almudena Cathedral, and more. You will try tapas and churros, and receive all the "instructions for use" of Madrid.
What to Expect
Key Points on Madrid's Map and Its Biography
The walking route will cover all the main attractions, filled with stories about Madrid's history. You will learn about the first inhabitants of these lands, the founding of the city, and why Madrid did not immediately become the capital of Spain. You will unravel the numerous Habsburgs and Bourbons, walking through the sights of both dynasties. The itinerary includes:
- Puerta del Sol Square, where we will meet by the statue of "The Bear and the Strawberry Tree" (traditionally the starting point of tours). I will tell you why this animal became the symbol of the capital, as well as about the coat of arms of Madrid-city and Madrid-province.
- Plaza Mayor Square, which witnessed inquisitions and masquerades. I will show you paintings depicting events at Plaza Mayor, and you will compare them to the modern appearance of this place.
- Plaza de Oriente Square: you will learn about outstanding Spanish kings and stroll through the picturesque Sabatini Gardens next to the Royal Palace — the Bourbon legacy.
- Plaza de la Villa Square, where you will get acquainted with the Mudejar architectural style (combining Moorish and Christian elements) showcasing Madrid's oldest building — the Lujanes Palace.
- Almudena Cathedral: I will explain how a small church ended up being built as a cathedral and why it took 110 years. If desired, we will peek inside, discussing the cathedral's structure and decoration.
Additionally, you will learn why the Madrid Opera is shaped like a coffin, hear the legend of a ghost in a church, and stroll along the elegant bustling Gran Vía.
Flavors of Madrid and Useful Recommendations
We will definitely visit the Mercado San Miguel market: you will learn about local delicacies and taste tapas from different regions of Spain. You will visit the world's oldest restaurant, savor chocolate churros at a cafe, and see a bookstore that has been here for 400 years. I will gladly answer all your questions and recommend places where you can eat well and inexpensively, watch flamenco, and taste local wine.
