About this experience
Since ancient times, the Netherlands had two main products - cheese and herring. It is believed that partly thanks to them the country achieved prosperity. I invite you on a trip to the land of cheeses and to a fishing village. Amidst the sea landscapes and seagull cries, I will tell you in a long and fascinating way about how cheeses are made, herring is salted, how the Netherlands began, how the canals were built, and much more.
What to expect
Ancient smokehouse in Volendam
Meet the owner of the smokehouse in the fifth generation. I will tell you why herring picklers were not allowed to marry and were settled separately from the village. Here you will try herring 'richly' and understand why true Dutch people ate and still eat it this way.
Walk in Volendam
We will stroll through the cozy streets of the village. You can take beautiful photos in traditional costumes. I will explain the differences between the people of Volendam and Amsterdam and why local residents have been able to swim fully clothed since the age of 6. I will share how clogs, Dutch wooden shoes, helped workers in sawmills and farms.
Dutch cheese dairy and hotel-museum
Visit a real cheese dairy. Taste the best cheeses in the region - gouda, edam, with pesto and smoked, from goat and sheep milk, with mustard, jam, jam, paired with white or pink wine. I will tell you about the stages of cheese production. And then we will visit a unique hotel-museum where artists from all over the world stayed.
Edam, cheeses, and shipyard
And finally, to fully experience the spirit of old Holland, we will head to the famous city of Edam, which is almost 650 years old. We will visit the square where cheese makers used to bring their products on boats. We will see one of the oldest shipyards in the country and taste fragrant apple pie at the Michelin-starred 'Fortuna' hotel.
