What to expect
A Journey into the Past
Edam, Volendam, and Marken are ancient fishing towns built in the 15th-16th centuries. Picasso, Claude Monet, Renoir, and other artists recently stayed here. We will start by taking a bus to Edam: visit the ancient weighing house, stop at the country's 'hunchback' bridge, admire the works of Impressionists in a local hotel, and explore the city's landmarks. Then we will wander through the alleys of the fishing village Volendam and count the sailboats on the waterfront. And of course, we will taste local cheeses, herring, and even smoked eel soup served in wine glasses.
About Rural Life – and More!
What funny sayings and legends flourish in these towns and villages? How do provincial Dutch people live in general? What are their views on family, religion, and art? How do they relax and have fun? We will share the most interesting facts about the inhabitants of these places, our observations, and intriguing facts about the most advanced rural agriculture in the world, where innovations blend seamlessly with traditions.
