About this experience
During the trip to Edam and Volendam, you will get acquainted with the history of Dutch cheese and hear the legends of a medieval town with doll houses and drawbridges.
What to expect
Edam charms the traveler from the first sight. The quiet, homely atmosphere of this medieval town is completely different from bustling Amsterdam. We will walk along cozy, quiet streets where 'doll' houses from the 16th - 18th centuries are located - the architectural heritage of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. You will see picturesque canals, flower courtyards, ancient wooden drawbridges over the canals, the oldest shipyard. We will reach the square where Edam cheese - the local delicacy - was delivered by boats.
You will learn about the ritual that the cheese merchant and the buyer followed when negotiating the price. One of the houses on this square depicts a mermaid. Because Edam is not just an ancient town. It is a town of legends. And one of them is about a mermaid who lived on land and yearned for the sea.
And where else, if not in Edam, to buy the cheese named after this town? Traditional, with spices, black pepper, or truffles. Here you can find cheese for every taste!
If you want to taste the most delicious herring and smoked eel in the Netherlands, then you should go to Volendam - the world-famous fishing village. This village is known for its landscapes and a special atmosphere created by the sea, sun, sailboat masts, and neat Dutch houses. Here, behind the seemingly ordinary facade of a hotel, hides a real picture gallery. You enter and find yourself at the end of the 19th century. And very close to the bustling harbor are quiet old streets. This is another side of Volendam - quiet, cozy.
