About this experience
Over the centuries of rule, the Bavarian ruling dynasty of the Wittelsbachs amassed huge collections of furniture, sculptures, porcelain, silver, paintings, and jewels. During the tour of the Royal Residence in Munich, you will discover interesting and non-obvious aspects of the monarchs' lives - from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. You will see masterpieces from four eras: Baroque, Rococo, Renaissance, and Empire; wander through the magnificent ceremonial halls, understand the symbolism of royal regalia, and hear the history of the Wittelsbach dynasty.
What to Expect
Luxury and richness of palace interiors
The residence of the Bavarian dukes and kings is a huge complex with hundreds of rooms and 8 courtyards. We will walk through the suites of living quarters and ceremonial halls. You will see the Antiquarium - a magnificent hall with ancient marble busts - and learn what it was used for. I will tell you about the meanings of bizarre heraldry, lost furniture-making techniques. Ancient cult objects and creations of great masters, porcelain and inlay, jewels, and exquisite decorations will tell their amazing stories!
Splendor of the crown
You will be amazed by the frescoes of the ceremonial halls and charmed by the atmosphere of the bedrooms and boudoirs of the Bavarian rulers. Explore the courtyard with an artificial grotto: it is entirely made of shells and looks like a toy - I will explain the secret symbolism behind it. In the Treasury, where the world's most valuable collections of rarities are kept, you will admire the royal regalia and learn why the solemn coronation ceremony never took place at the Bavarian court. And in the "Gallery of Ancestors", the portraits and genealogical tree of the Wittelsbachs will tell the story of the Bavarian ruling dynasty, claiming to trace their lineage back to Charlemagne himself.
