About this experience
Hofburg is one of the most famous (and largest) royal residences in the world. Since the 13th century, it has been repeatedly rebuilt and filled with artifacts symbolizing the power of the Holy Roman Empire and later the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In the 20th century, most of the palace rooms were transformed into museums. We will see the main treasures of these collections, discuss their value and purpose.
What to Expect
- The collection of musical instruments and the armory collection of Hofburg will shed light on the deep essence of aristocratic activities such as hunting, knightly tournaments, and music.
- The Museum of the World presents a collection of Habsburg souvenirs from non-European countries. Some of them are the only witnesses of the cultures of disappeared civilizations.
- In the Ephesus Museum, you will see statues and reliefs from this ancient Greek city.
- In the Imperial Treasury, explore imperial attributes. Both those that symbolized power in ancient times and those that are a sign of belonging to the elite society today.
- In the Grand Hall of the Austrian National Library, see how high importance is given to the preservation and dissemination of knowledge since the Enlightenment era.
I will tell you:
- Why the Habsburg family encouraged professional mastery of musical instruments and which instruments were allowed to be played by the monarch
- How deer hunting is connected to Christianity, and boar hunting to paganism
- Why falcon hunting was considered an art
- The difference between a colonial and a scientific approach to artifacts of other cultures. Let's discuss this at the only preserved headdress of the Aztecs in the world - the 'Crown of Montezuma.'
- The meaning behind 'useless' attributes and 'boring' ceremonies
- Which of the exclusive dynastic markers passed to the Republic of Austria and which still remain the prerogative of the House of Habsburg
