About this experience
The most majestic of all King Ludwig II's palaces - Herrenchiemsee, or the Bavarian Versailles - awaits you on an island in the middle of an emerald lake. The neighboring islet, where the oldest women's monastery in Bavaria is located, is full of romantic corners. We will visit them by boat, breathe in the unique air of the Alps and enjoy the nature that inspired many artists and poets.
What to expect
Men's Island
Herrenchiemsee Palace is built on the "men's island" of the largest lake in Bavaria - Chiemsee, surrounded by emerald lake water and eternal Alps. This is the Bavarian Versailles, erected by Ludwig II in honor of his idol, the French Sun King Louis XIV. In the southern wing of the palace is the museum of Ludwig II. You will see royal portraits, court dresses, decorations for the king's favorite operas, as well as models of his grand but unrealized projects.
Women's Island
After strolling through the elegant garden with impeccable flowerbeds and fountains, we will head to Fraueninsel - Women's Island. Here, in the 8th century, the oldest Benedictine monastery in Bavaria was founded. We will talk about the Bavarian monastery tradition and the modern life of the nuns. You can try the local marzipan pastry - the so-called "pilgrim's bread." Or the herbal liqueur of the monastery, the recipe of which has been strictly secret since the 15th century. In a local restaurant that has been hosting guests for 600 years, you will be served fresh fish soup and lake fish.
