About this experience
Vayots Dzor region is the smallest in the country both in terms of area and population. But in my opinion, in terms of the quantity of natural and man-made wonders, legends, and tales, it far surpasses other regions of Armenia. Besides the famous Noravank monastery and Areni wines, there is plenty of interesting things here. And I will show you some amazing locations on this journey.
What to Expect
- We will head to the very heart of the region, to the upper reaches of the crystal-clear Yeghegis River, to the medieval estate of the influential Orbelyan princes.
- We will climb to a height of 2000m and explore the 10-14th century citadel Smbataberd.
- In the village of Yeghegis, you will see the Surb Zorats Church, built in the early 14th century for blessing the cavalry going to fight the Mamluks. I will tell you what makes it unique on the tour.
- Nearby, we will visit one of the most mysterious places of medieval Armenia: an old abandoned Jewish cemetery. Together we will explore how and why it ended up here.
- As a conclusion, we will head to a geothermal geyser-like spring. It erupts from the ground at regular intervals - always fun and unpredictable.
Organizational Details
- Transfer in a Subaru Forester crossover and the guidance of a guide are included in the price
- Part of the path to Smbataberd Fortress and the geyser will involve off-road driving. In winter months with heavy snow, the ascent to the fortress will be on foot only (up to 3km) or we will replace the location with a 13th-century medieval bridge by agreement.
- Upon request, you can have lunch at a winemaker in Areni - $15-20 per person
