About this experience
I invite you to a walking tour of the neighborhood across the river, known as the Republic within a Republic, Vilnius Montmartre, and the bohemian district of Vilnius.
This area has been separated from the Old Town by the bends of the Vilnia River, hence it has been called the district "across the river" - Uzupis in Lithuanian. Mentions of it can be found in historical documents dating back to the 16th century. The neighborhood was mainly inhabited by craftsmen. By the late 19th century, military personnel and petty officials started to settle in Uzupis, although most of the inhabitants were urban poor. Like the people, so is the district. Until 1990, the quarter was one of the most abandoned places in the city. Today, this small, isolated, one of the oldest districts of Vilnius is a thriving and flourishing island of the city. And much more!
