About this experience
Join me on a journey to the unique 'state' of Uzupis, hidden in the center of Vilnius. Explore its colorful streets, learn about the local way of life, discover charming courtyards, and enjoy a marvelous panoramic view of the Lithuanian capital from the Altana hill.
What to Expect
History of Uzupis
You will pass through the border checkpoint of the republic, where you can get local visas as a souvenir. You will read the Constitution of Uzupis translated into 50 languages and learn about its values. I will immerse you in the 16th century and answer key questions: how did the district across the Vilnia River come about, who lived here, what were these people doing, and how did the Uzupis Republic emerge on this land centuries later. I will also show you the main historical artifacts: the monastery and cemetery of the Bernardine monks, the Gonesta Palace, Tibet Square, and the church of St. Bartholomew.
Art and Local Residents
I will help you capture the unique atmosphere of Uzupis, the prevailing lightness and creative freedom here. I will share stories from the personal lives of local residents that cannot be found in any guidebook. These stories will help you understand the peculiarities of human relationships in the bohemian republic. You will also definitely see the main attractions of Uzupis: the art objects of the Art Incubator, the pottery workshop, the monuments to the Mermaid, the Angel, and even the Bottle Opener!
