About this experience
Many people think that interesting places in Armenia are limited to Yerevan, Sevan, and Garni. On a tour of native Ashtarak, I will show you how much this little-known town can tell about the country. You will learn about the Catholico who fought in the Russo-Turkish War, walk in the footsteps of great writers, explore ancient churches, and appreciate the colorful landscapes of the city on the high bank of the Kasakh River.
What to Expect
City History
Strolling through the historical center, you will trace the main milestones of its development. You will learn how many wars and invasions it survived, how it rose like a phoenix in the Soviet era and independent Armenia. And you will see how its distinctive appearance combines attributes of modernity, the charm of provincialism, and the special atmosphere of Early Medieval churches.
Walking in the Footsteps of Iconic Figures
At the monument to Nerses Ashtaraketsi, I will tell you about the Catholicos of all Armenians (the highest spiritual rank of the Armenian Apostolic Church). During the years of another Russo-Turkish war, he defended the city with arms in hand together with the Russian army. Near the house-museum of the great Perch Proshyan, we will talk about the classic of Armenian literature. And later, in the courtyard of one of the temples, you will learn about the famous Armenian writer Gevorg Emin buried here.
Ashtarak's Sanctuaries
The soul and heart of Armenia are in its ancient churches. Our country became the world's first Christian state, and the Armenian Apostolic Church is one of the oldest Christian churches. The deep connection with religion is felt in every city here, and Ashtarak is no exception. I will show you the church of Karmravor, dedicated in verses by Osip Mandelstam. Introduce you to the recently restored ancient church of Saint Marianeh. You will also see the ruins of the Spitakavor and Tsiranavor churches and the relatively new Surb Sargis church.
And of course, we will not overlook Ashtarak's symbol — the historical 16th-century bridge, where we will talk about its unusual construction and significance in the city's life.
