What to Expect
Berlin Bridges - an Unconventional History
Our bike journey will start from the center of West Berlin. You will discover which bridges are associated with Napoleon and Bismarck, and visit a bridge designed by the Fuhrer's architect. I will tell you how the city's ruins were cleared after World War I, and we will discuss why Germans supported the Nazis' rise to power. Then we will ride to the Palace Bridge, which strikingly resembles the Anichkov Bridge across the Fontanka River. You will hear why these two objects are identical to each other and have the opportunity to take a photo in a Petersburg corner of Berlin.
On the way, we will admire the main attractions, enjoy views of the river, and even visit the alternative youth district - Kreuzberg. And then we will head to the eastern part of the city.
Berlin Wall - Before, During, After
The division of the capital into western and eastern parts is one of the most difficult chapters in Germany's history. I will guide you through its milestones: from 15 years of post-war life without a wall to the consequences of its existence. You will see where the first victim of the divided city fell. Examine a preserved piece of the wall hidden from tourists' eyes. I will explain the differences in life on both sides of the wall, how people migrated from one part of the city to another, and why West Berlin ended up in an economic blockade. You will touch the history of the Cold War symbol and understand how echoes of that era still resonate in Berlin's life.
