Along the Berlin Wall by Bike: Everything about the Symbol of Post-War Germany
About this experience
The Berlin Wall is one of the most tragic chapters in the history of the German capital. On this tour, I will reveal interesting facts about this structure. I will tell you about the lucky ones who crossed the border and those who were less fortunate, about the citizens' uprising and the fall of the wall. You will feel how Berliners lived in a divided city.
What to Expect
From Potsdamer Platz to the Wall Memorial
We will ride through the former area of the Berlin Wall, showing you how the border between the Western city and the Soviet part used to be. You will see machine gun and control towers, the Reichstag, the old hospital, Checkpoint Charlie, and the Wall Memorial. The place where its first victim fell, the military cemetery that the border ran through, and the former Gestapo headquarters - structures of the uneasy 20th century will be part of our route.
The Berlin Wall: People and World Events
You will understand the prehistory of the wall - how the Western city suffered from the blockade and why the wall appeared. I will then tell you about those who tried to cross the border. You will hear about the tragic fate of Peter Fechter and learn about the daredevil who managed to escape right in front of the border guards' eyes. You will delve into the details of the 1953 uprising: why it happened, how the GDR leadership reacted to it, and what the residents of West Berlin did. The history of the old cemetery, the tank standoff between the Soviet Union and America, the fall of the wall - the most important facts about the symbol of the Cold War will be revealed to you on the tour.
