About this experience
This tour is an introduction to the London pub culture. We will visit the most notable establishments in the city and try to understand why pubs are a central part of British life.
A pub is an integral part of English and London life. Books and doctoral dissertations have been written about it. This culture is unique and endearing in its own way. A significant part of the British life takes place here. This is where they meet, gather after work, celebrate Christmas and birthdays, cheer for their team. It is not surprising that pubs are often referred to as 'local' - meaning they belong to the community. Essentially, the word 'pub' is a shortened form of 'public house'. The term originated from the Romans, along with the tradition of opening drinking establishments in cities. Initially, taverns served not beer or ale, but wine imported from the continent. Pub signs with names only appeared during the reign of Richard II, along with the requirement of obtaining a license for such activities.
