What to Expect
Picturesque Czech Town
From Prague, you will head to the meeting point of the two largest rivers - Labe and Vltava: this is where the history of the town of Melnik began in the 9th century. You will explore the central square, surrounded by charming historic houses with rich history. The medieval layout, part of the defensive structures, and a well have also been preserved in the town center. If you wish, you can visit it by descending into the city's underground.
Luxurious Halls of Melnik Castle
For many centuries, the castle was royal property and passed down to Czech queens after the death of their husbands. You will stroll through the castle's rooms: admire authentic furniture from the 17th-18th centuries, paintings by Dutch masters and Czech artists of the Baroque era, exquisite dishes and porcelain from France, China, and Japan, a collection of unique city and country maps. And of course, you will learn about the ancient noble Lobkowicz family, whose descendants still own Melnik Castle.
Wine Tasting in the Wine Cellars
At the foot of the castle, vineyards spread out, from which wine is still made according to ancient traditions. A castle employee will tell you about the features of local winemaking, and you will enjoy several types of wine, accompanied by bread and cheese. You can purchase the wines you liked at the local wine shop, some of which are sold in original 'pear-shaped' bottles.
Ossuary - Not for the Faint-Hearted
From March to October, if you wish, you can also visit the ossuary in the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul. Since the 16th century, when a plague epidemic broke out, the remains of 15,000 city residents have been stored here. Although this charnel house is inferior in size and ornate design to the famous Chapel in Kutna Hora, it also leaves a strong impression.
