About this experience
Discover the historical sights of Armenia! In our program, there are two ancient monasteries - Akhtala and Sanahin. Both are included in the UNESCO heritage list, and you will see that it's worth it. These are beautiful examples of Armenian medieval architecture that you will admire surrounded by mountain landscapes. And the guide will tell you interesting facts from their past.
What to expect
Departing from Tbilisi at 09:00, we will be at the border with Armenia in about an hour, which we will cross in about 40 minutes. Half an hour drive - and we will be at the first stop on the route.
Akhtala Monastery (1 hour)
Founded by Queen Khosrovanush (wife of King Ashot III of Armenia) in 976. This active monastery consists of a narthex, two tomb halls, a refectory, a scriptorium, the Amazasp chapel, a bell tower, and several chapels. You will admire the architectural ensemble and also examine ancient tombs and khachkars.
After a 40-minute drive, we will reach the second stop.
Sanahin Monastery, Alaverdi (1 hour)
Sanahin was one of the main medieval centers of Northern Armenia. Here was also the family burial vault of the Kurik Bagratids (10th and 11th centuries) and the episcopal residence of the diocese (until the 11th century). You will see the church complex, buildings with roofs covered in greenery, internal spaces with vaults and columns.
Organizational details
- Make sure to bring your passport for border crossing
- I or another guide-driver from our team will conduct the tour for you
- The trip will be on a minivan or another comfortable transport depending on the group size
- We will make a stop by the river where you can have lunch in a restaurant if you wish (payment as per the menu)

One unforgettable day from our trip was truly beautiful and interesting, ancient churches of Akhtala and Sanahin, a restaurant with delicious dinner. We also enjoyed spending time shopping on the main street. We are very grateful to Zurab, thank you.
