Secret Treasures of Armenia: Khachkars in Noratus and Sevanavank Monastery
About this experience
Armenia is full of places that not only carry religious significance but also remind of legendary past events. This route combines such locations - both well-known and off the beaten path. The program includes an ancient field of khachkars, Lake Sevan, and Sevanavank Monastery. Plus, several photo stops for capturing amazing shots!
What to expect
Field of Khachkars in Noratus
In the ancient Armenian village lies the largest and oldest cemetery of khachkars - stone-carved architectural monuments. The main part of a khachkar is a cross, surrounded by numerous patterns and ornaments. You will see over a thousand khachkars spread across a huge 7-hectare field.
Lake Sevan
This is one of the 'great seas' of Greater Armenia, along with Lakes Van and Urmia which are now located in Turkey and Iran. Out of the three, only Sevan belongs to Armenia. This is why the locals cherish and protect it. Relaxing by the lake, you'll witness its mood changes, the whispers of waves, and the flights of seagulls for hours.
Sevanavank Monastery
Located on a peninsula on Lake Sevan. After climbing about 200 steps, we will find ourselves in a complex that captivates with its unique architecture and beautiful view. Moreover, you'll learn how the history of this church is linked to the spread of Christianity in Armenia.
During the trip, I will not only reveal the history of Armenia but also provide useful advice:
- Where to buy the best wine, brandy, and souvenirs,
- Where else to visit? What to see in the vicinity of Yerevan?
- What is the Armenian mentality like? (conservatism, medicine, politics, safety, history, alphabet, etc.)
