About this experience
Rhodes is a well-known place of pilgrimage for many Christians from around the world. The island is home to about two hundred monasteries, churches, and chapels. Some of them are widely written about in guidebooks and promotional brochures, while others are little-known not only to tourists but also to locals. You will get acquainted with Christian shrines, visit remote monasteries and churches away from worldly life, immerse yourself in the centuries-old history of Orthodoxy, and see the beauties of the central part of the island.
What to Expect
Venerated Saints of Rhodes
The tour will begin with one of the dozen cave chapels of Rhodes. You will see how lovingly and respectfully the local residents take care of such places, and I will tell you about the patron saints of our island. After that, I will take you to the monastery of Saint Nectarios, little-known in Russia but highly venerated in Greece. Here you will see a unique plane tree that locals lovingly call the tree of life. Founded at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, the monastery is also famous for its spring at the foot of the hill. According to beliefs, its water is blessed and has healing properties.
Shrines of Mount Prophet Elijah
On the second largest mountain on Rhodes, Mount Prophet Elijah in Fountoukli, you will visit the four-aisled Byzantine church of Saint Nicholas and admire its magnificent frescoes. The church was founded in the 15th century and is still active today. At the very top of the mountain, whose slopes are covered with pines and cypresses, rare species of shrubs and plants, you will inspect the church of Prophet Elijah. In the central part of the island, we will visit the women's monastery of the Virgin Ipseni, where you can venerate the relics of Saint Meletius, or visit the men's monastery in Faros, the history of which dates back to the 12th century. We will visit the church of Saint Panteleimon with the relics of this saint and the church of Panagia Tsambika with a miraculous icon that helps women find happiness in motherhood. Optionally, you can visit the 13th-century church of Saint Nicholas in Trianda and its contemporary - the church of Panagia Katholiki with unique frescoes. Each of these places has its own story, which I will gladly tell you about.
