About this experience
Near Almaty, there are two unique places waiting to be explored. Let's visit both! First, we'll stop by the (supposedly) medieval nomad fortress, a structure that shouldn't exist in the Kazakh steppe but does. You'll learn about its origins and take a stroll through the deserted streets. Then, we'll head to the rocks adorned with images of Buddha and runic inscriptions of an ancient nomadic people.
What to Expect
The Nomad Fortress, also known as Nomad Castle on the Ili River, is a peculiar construction. It served as a set for the film 'Nomad.' During the filming in 2004, props of an ancient Eastern fortress were needed. Suddenly, a medieval city appeared in the middle of the Kazakh steppe! You'll walk around it and capture incredible photos.
Tamgaly-Tas ('stones with signs') - a place near the Ili River. The rocks here are covered with petroglyphs depicting Buddha, Buddhist symbols, and inscriptions. Besides them, ancient Turkic runic inscriptions left by the Kipchaks (Cumans) can be found on the stones. Let's try to understand the purpose of this place together.
