About this experience
At the heart of this tour is the creativity and life of Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio. The fame of this artist has transcended epochs not only because of the explosiveness of his work, but also thanks to the charm of his personality. The best way to immerse yourself in Caravaggio's world is to stroll through ancient Rome, easily discovering the master's masterpieces in beautiful churches, delving into the history and symbolism of his paintings, navigating through crowded streets, and finding houses from the 16th-17th centuries, witnesses of that time. As a result, you will come closer to understanding Caravaggio's personality: his inner world will no longer seem superficial and chaotic, and the secrets of his masterpieces will be in your hands.
What to Expect
Understanding the genius and reformer's personality
We will talk about the most irreverent and extravagant Italian artist - Caravaggio, who is called a genius, madman, murderer, and revolutionary. We will try to figure out who he really was. You will hear an intriguing story about the master's life, learn about the mysteries and questions surrounding his elusive image. During the walk through the streets of Rome, I will help you enter the world of the great artist: you will see the house where Caravaggio lived, the tavern where he gathered with his daredevil friends, the intersection where a tragic event occurred, playing a fateful role in the artist's destiny, and the streets where his patrons lived.
Meeting Caravaggio's masterpieces
You will get acquainted with six authentic paintings by the Italian genius, learn about Caravaggio's working methods and the modern discoveries of historians and restorers. During the tour, I will tell you in which Russian museum the first version of the work 'The Crucifixion of Saint Peter' is located and what happened to the first versions of the paintings 'The Calling of Saint Matthew' and 'Saint Matthew with an Angel'. You will try to read the language of gestures and gazes in the brilliant canvases, find the face of Caravaggio himself among the crowd of characters in the painting 'The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew', and of course, learn who the beautiful lady was in the painting 'Madonna di Loreto' and hear the story associated with her.
Organizational Details
Caravaggio's paintings that we will explore on the tour are freely accessible in churches, so no entrance tickets will be needed. However, it should be noted that from 12:30 to 15:30, Roman churches are closed for lunch.
