About this experience
Many are familiar with Cabo da Roca, but in this journey you will visit another cape, equally beautiful and much wilder - Espichel. In addition to breathtaking views and sensations, the day will be remembered for the vibrant nature of Serra da Arrabida, stories of ancient lighthouse-saviors, legends of medieval miracles, and... footprints of Mesozoic reptiles!
What to expect
Cape Espichel - Facing the Wind and Power of the Ocean
The path to the cape, located west of Sesimbra, will lead through the natural reserve of Serra da Arrabida. You will discover impressive landscapes of the mountain range, as well as views of the ocean and the fairy-tale bay formed by the mouth of the Sado River and the Troia Peninsula. Upon arriving at Cabo Espichel, you will appreciate the wild beauty of the deserted cape with whimsical cliffs and feel the grandeur of the water element. And after a walk around the area, you will head towards exploring the sights that are rarely visited by travelers.
One of the Oldest Lighthouses in Portugal
Near the first symbol of the cape, I will tell you about the dangerous coasts of Portugal and Marquis de Pombal, who built a network of lighthouses to help arriving sailors. You will visit one of the earliest lighthouses, which has been performing its functions for over 200 years. Additionally, on Thursdays, the lighthouse keeper will conduct an extra tour for you. Inside the tower, you will see old steam-powered machines and a clock system that is ready to work in case of engine failure.
Chapel of Memory and Church of Our Lady
Next, you will visit the chapel on the edge of the cliff, where you will hear about an important place of pilgrimage, which became so in the 13th century. I will tell you a few mysterious legends related to the shrine, and then introduce you to the history of the emergence of the Church of Our Lady and the pilgrims' house. The richly decorated Baroque-style church can be viewed from the inside, while the pilgrims' quarters - only from the outside, as the structures have fallen into disrepair over time.
Traces of Dinosaurs
The most unexpected part of the adventure will be the impressive footprints of dinosaur claws. On the neighboring cliffs, you will be able to closely examine the traces of vertebrates originating from the last period of the Mesozoic era, and I will tell you a little about these discoveries and amazing facts related to the dating of the fossils found. On the way back, I will take you to the magnificent fortress in the town of Sesimbra. You will take in the view of the ancient Moorish castle located on top of the mountain and enjoy wonderful views of the city, surroundings, and harbor.
