About this experience
In the heart of Athens lies the ancient Agora - the square where the democratic traditions of the Greek people originated. Join me in transporting back thousands of years: exploring ancient sanctuaries and temples, galleries and law courts, theaters and odeons. We will remember Socrates and Pericles, admire the view of the Acropolis, and examine unique artifacts in the Agora museum.
What to expect
The Agora Complex: Daily life in ancient Athens
How the Athenians learned to govern their city, what orders reigned in ancient Athens, which gods were worshipped at the foot of the Acropolis, and how the most famous ancient festival took place - we will talk about all of this as we stroll through the ancient Agora. You will see the foundation of Panafineon Street and the altar of Zeus, the temples of Hephaestus and Athena, the management buildings of Tholos, Bouleuterion, and Metroon. We will pay attention to reliefs, statues, vessels, sundials, and coins. Near the foundation of Socrates' prison, we will find out why and how the philosopher was judged. And of course, enjoy the stunning view of the Acropolis hill.
To the roots of democracy
We will step into the vaults of the ancient gallery, which has become a museum. Here you will understand how Athens developed in the democratic period, how the first electoral institutions and mechanisms worked. Examine the marble stele, pottery pieces of 'ostraka' with the name of the sentenced person to exile from the city, a precursor to voting ballots, and even miniature vessels for carrying out the verdict (poisoning of the convicts).
