About this experience
During a walk through the oldest districts of the capital, you will touch upon the era of Ancient Greece, which laid the foundation of Western civilization. We will discuss the development of architecture, science, and art. We will explore the monuments of Antiquity. By examining the symbols of the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of Athens' past. You will also learn about the modern culture of the city.
What to Expect
- Strolling through the narrow streets of the Plaka district, I will show you where the philosopher Dimosphenes wandered and explain why Ancient Greece became the cradle of philosophy as a science.
- While exploring the Acropolis, you will learn about Athens' Golden Age.
- Near the famous Lysicrates Monument, we will discuss ancient Greek theater and why the monument was placed in the heart of Athens.
- You will see the Arch of Hadrian – the story of this monument dedicated to the ancient Roman emperor will transport us back to the Roman era in Greek lands.
- In a small museum, you will examine archaeological finds: household items, amphorae used to store and transport wine and olive oil, as well as ancient burials and a unique aqueduct.
- We will not overlook the 11th-century Byzantine Church of Saint Nicholas.
- Walking through the Roman Agora, you will see the Tower of the Winds (the oldest meteorological monument in Athens) and Roman public latrines – we will discuss why they were pay-to-use.
- We will visit the medrese and mosque from the Ottoman era, as well as the ruins of the famous Library of Hadrian.
- You will observe how Greeks relax in cafes and restaurants. Along the way, we will talk about the national cuisine.
- We will walk along the famous shopping street where Greek fashionistas buy clothes.
- We will stop by the Cathedral of the Annunciation, where the relics of two Greek saints are located.
- Additionally, you will get acquainted with the architecture of the Byzantine Church of St. Eleftherios, known for its carved façade.
- And at Syntagma Square, you will understand its historical and social significance in the life of the capital.
