About this experience
If you want to get to know Denmark better through its national cuisine, preferred by Hans Christian Andersen, then this tour is for you! We will walk along the cobblestone streets of Copenhagen, visit the house where the fairy tale writer lived, explore Andersen's favorite spots, and try the dishes he preferred.
What to expect
A walk through the atmospheric corners of Copenhagen
We will stroll past the Royal Academy of Arts to the picturesque Nyhavn harbor. Along the waterfront, we will admire the colorful houses from the 17th-18th centuries, peek into sailor bars and taverns located on the ground floors. Then we will move to the medieval part of the city, where you will learn all the interesting facts from Copenhagen's history, reach the oldest city square and the lobed place. And along the way, I will tell you the story of Andersen's unrequited love for the opera singer Jenny Lind, whom the writer dedicated the fairy tales 'The Nightingale,' 'The Snow Queen,' and 'The Little Mermaid.'
Secrets of Danish herring in an old tavern
In one of the taverns on the canal, where old schooners smelling of sea and fish are moored, we will try over 12 dishes of Danish herring, prepared according to ancient Viking recipes. You will discover the secrets of homemade local pickles and learn about the drink that started the history of Danish aquavit. And, of course, beer! You will be treated to a large variety of delicious beers that Denmark is famous for.
National cuisine at Andersen's favorite restaurant
For lunch, we will visit the restaurant where Andersen liked to dine. Here you will be presented with the majesty of smørrebrød, the king of Danish cuisine! The art of the Danish open sandwich is akin to ikebana: everything should be not only tasty but also beautiful, like in a fairy tale. You can taste smørrebrød with hot bacon, liver pâté with truffles, milk-fed veal cutlets, asparagus, North Sea shrimp, duck meat... And the most famous smørrebrød bears the name of Hans Christian Andersen himself.
