What to Expect
Szekesfehervar - city of kings
👑 First, you will visit the city founded by the Hungarian prince in the late 10th century and later played a crucial role in Hungary's history. Szekesfehervar was the first capital of the country where monarchs ascended the throne for five centuries, and many of them were buried in the same city.
⛪ I will introduce you to beautiful architectural landmarks. Our program includes St. Stephen's Cathedral, St. Anne's Chapel, the Town Hall building, the Bishop's Palace, the Carmelite Church, St. Imre's Church, the baroque Vörösmarty Theatre building. You will also see magnificent sculptures, floral clocks, a fountain made of red marble, and a tower with clock figurines featuring Hungarian kings. In the Garden of Ruins, we continue the conversation about the city's outstanding past.
🍰 Along our route, there will be numerous pastry shops, one of which I recommend for an exquisite dessert. After that, we will head to Borivar Castle just a few kilometers from the center of Szekesfehervar. You will learn about the history of the castle of eternal love, or the Hungarian Taj Mahal, which the architect built for his beloved wife for over 40 years.
Veszprem - city of queens
👑 Next, we will move to one of Hungary's oldest cities, situated like Rome on seven hills. I will tell you about the founding of the episcopal see and the privilege of Veszprem bishops to crown Hungarian queens: they all underwent this sacred act here, from the spouse of St. Stephen to the wife of the last king, Charles I of Habsburg.
🏰 Veszprem preserves more medieval monuments than other Hungarian cities. In the fortress part, you will see the Bishop's Palace, the Giselle Chapel, St. Michael's Cathedral, Hero's Gate, the monument to Stephen and Giselle overlooking the cliff of the fortress hill. On the town square, you will admire the Baroque-style Town Hall building and the city's 45-meter symbol - the Fire Tower. We will not overlook the Petőfi Theatre in Secession style and the very beautiful Dezső Laczkó Museum. Then we will descend into a narrow valley to the ruins of a Dominican convent.
🍷 The journey will conclude in one of the country's most famous wine regions - at the foot of Mount Badacsony, in the village of Badacsonytomaj, where you can taste local wines and savor incredibly delicious Hungarian dishes.
