About this experience
To understand the influence of Greek culture on the development of Cyprus, it is essential to visit Paphos - the ancient capital of the island. You will explore the greatest monuments left by the ancient Greeks on the island: you will find yourself in the birthplace of the goddess Aphrodite, climb the walls of the ancient fort, admire the amazing mosaics of the House of Dionysus, and explore the monumental Tombs of the Kings.
What to Expect
Legends of Goddess Aphrodite
Many legends are associated with Aphrodite's Rock, the birthplace of the goddess of love. It is said that if you swim around Aphrodite's Rock counterclockwise, time will turn back, and you will forever remain young, healthy, and beautiful. During the journey, you will bathe in the quiet and beautiful bay, and learn why the ancient Greeks considered this place the birthplace of Aphrodite and what beliefs are associated with it.
Walk through the ancient city
You will visit an open-air museum city steeped in history and romance. You will explore the walls that remember the warriors of Alexander the Great, walk from Paphos Castle along the picturesque promenade with palm trees, shops, and souvenir stalls, and then enjoy the views of the bay from the old fort walls.
Mosaics at the House of Dionysus
In Paphos, you will admire the most beautiful and well-preserved ancient mosaics of Cyprus, the most famous of which are located in the House of Dionysus. Some mistakenly believe that the house once belonged to the god Dionysus or was his sanctuary. In reality, the name of the house is related to the mosaics preserved here: you will see ancient scenes dedicated to Dionysus - the god of wine and revelry, the god who gave people the vine and taught them to make wine.
Visit the Tombs of the Kings
You will learn about the history of the grand Tombs of the Kings, considered one of the main archaeological attractions of Paphos. This monumental burial complex with underground structures carved into solid rock in the 4th century BCE. You will explore the majestic halls of the tombs, learn what this place can tell about Cypriot culture, and why, despite the name, kings were not buried here.
The trip will end with lunch at one of the restaurants on the promenade of the ancient city, where you will enjoy not only local dishes but also the southern sun, sea air, and a beautiful view from the balcony.
