What to expect
Ancient atmosphere in Diocletian's Palace
In the movie 'Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears,' one of the characters tells the story of Emperor Diocletian, who abdicated his power and created a palace where he lived until the end of his days. This story is absolutely true! You will see this for yourself by visiting the grandiose Diocletian's Palace, where Split originates, and walk along the ancient streets of the fortress-castle listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I will show you where in Diocletian's Palace the emperor grew cabbage, where the imperial summer terrace, reception hall, and kitchen were located. You will see how modern city dwellers can live in an ancient palace, visit the beautiful Cathedral of Saint Domnius and the pagan temple of Jupiter. You will also stroll through an underground corridor where scenes from 'Game of Thrones' were filmed and look at the ancient sphinx, which, according to legend, was brought from the tomb of Thutmose III in Egypt.
Interweaving of cultures on the streets of Split
During a walk through Split, you will discover corners of antiquity in the courtyards of residential houses that ordinary tourists might simply overlook, and understand how closely Roman and Slavic cultures are intertwined in the city. You will visit the small church of Saint Martin, where Dominican nuns live, touch the big toe of the giant bronze statue of Bishop Gregory of Nin for good luck, and see the most curious corners of Split. Pleasant surprises will be the references to Russian culture found on the city streets: Pushkin Square, Tolstoy Street, Tchaikovsky Park - all this in Split!
All the deliciousness in the city
We will definitely talk about Croatian national cuisine and its most characteristic dishes. You will learn where to buy local wines, oysters, and olive oil in Split, and where to taste brudet - a dish of seafood stewed in white wine with olive oil, parsley, and garlic.
