What to Expect
Sololaki District: Space of Masterpieces
We will start the walk in one of the most picturesque districts of old Tbilisi. Almost all buildings in Sololaki were built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Here you will find classics and Renaissance, baroque and vintage. And this entire labyrinth of eclecticism is a real open-air museum with its special atmosphere.
We will talk about Italian architects, for whom this district became home, and such a unique phenomenon as 'Caucasian modernism'. We will imagine how the aristocracy of the Romanov style was born here and the Eastern tale of 'One Thousand and One Nights'. You will see that Sololaki is a space with amazing and unique architecture of streets. And you will hear the names of patrons and architects who made Sololaki what it is.
In our program: the house of the Seilamov brothers, the former hostel for noble girls, the house of the Simens family, the house of Kalantarov, the house of Mantashev, the house of Beria, the house of the Persian consul Mirza-Rizi-Khan.
Museums of Old Tbilisi
We will then move to Rustaveli Avenue and discuss along the way why it was important for many patrons to organize independent art exhibitions in their mansions. You will visit the National Gallery, which showcases works by outstanding Georgian painters and sculptors. The museum is located in a former church of Russian glory, founded by the Romanovs. And after a brief overview of the exhibition, by group's request, we will visit the Zurab Tsereteli Museum of Modern Art, where his famous composition 'Apple' is exhibited.
