Bourgeois Sololaki: What Wealthy Tbilisi Residents Built a Century Ago
About this experience
At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Tbilisi made a colossal leap towards becoming a modern European city. You will vividly see in what economic and aesthetic context the Sololaki district emerged, proudly referred to by contemporaries as the Asian Paris. The guide will take you through iconic houses of that era, and together you will 'read' the styles, architecture, and urban fabric layout.
What to Expect
During the excursion, we will explore various architectural styles: eclectic, modern, orientalism, Gothic, Renaissance, and Rococo.
You will see:
- The largest house in Tbilisi before 1917
- The City Hall (building constructed in the 1830s)
- The most charming square in Tbilisi
- The house of the princes Eristavi by the architect Tatishchev
- The women's 'Gothic' gymnasium by the architect Ozerov
- The residential house of Saradzhishvili (the writers' house)
You will learn:
- What architecture is and how to 'read' it
- How skyscrapers are structured
- How Tbilisi transformed from a traditional city to a modernized one and felt part of the European community
- How architects of the era of capitalism flourishing in the Russian Empire managed to create an unforgettable appearance of the capital city
- And much more
