About this experience
Kayseri is the oldest city in Turkey with cozy streets and historical buildings. You will walk around the center, explore thousand-year-old structures, and discover traces of several civilizations. I will tell you why there are almost no Christians in the city with a Christian church and why Turks have so much respect for Atatürk.
What to expect
- The first stop of our tour is the 19th-century Christian church of the Virgin Mary in the very center of the city. I will tell when Christians used to live here and why there are almost none left today.
- Then you will stroll through the Turkish bazaar and see what the city lives on today. You will learn about the best dishes and delicacies made in Kayseri.
- You will walk to the Citadel - the heart of the fortress walls. The fortress was built in the 4th century and has been well preserved to this day.
- At the exit of the fortress - the modern central square with a monument to Atatürk. I will tell you why Atatürk is the most respected person in Turkey.
- You will see 12th century structures - the remains of a Seljuk city: a mosque, a bathhouse, a madrasa, a psychiatric hospital. The hospital now houses a museum - you will visit it and learn about the treatment methods used there.
- You will visit a picturesque quarter where you can take atmospheric photos among houses in the Ottoman style. And you will also see the high school that two Turkish presidents graduated from.
