About this experience
What does the 2019 European Capital of Culture look like? Houses on the slope of the valley, churches of the Benedictine, Dominican, Maltese, Franciscan orders, and a Roman amphitheater! I will introduce you to the hidden corners of the fairy-tale Matera, its history and legends, and the colorful landscapes will immerse you in the atmosphere of past centuries.
What to Expect
Grottoes, basilicas, and a river valley
The historic district of Sassi stretches along the valley. Residential houses - caves carved into the tuff - are located on its slope. You will learn how this architectural tradition originated and what hardships the residents of cave districts endured in the 20th century, see houses, churches, and entire monastery complexes. We will visit one of the sanctuaries with amazing Byzantine-style frescoes and talk about why Matera has a large number of religious orders and how the deceased were buried here in the past.
Unique Matera
Winding streets will lead us to a balcony with a viewing platform from which the old city will be visible as if on the palm of your hand. From the height, you will once again look at the most famous shantytowns in the world and Vittorio Veneto square: its graceful fountain, palace, and souvenir shops. We will visit the cave house-museum, where you will see details of peasant life of the past century. You will hear ancient urban legends and try to guess what the local tribe of Lucanians invented to protect themselves from the Romans, learn why a new carriage is built for the Virgin Mary every year, and what the rooster symbolizes in Matera. And at the end of the walk, we will treat ourselves to the best focaccia in Italy!
