About this experience
Matera is one of the oldest settlements on our planet. Along the narrow ravine, winding streets with houses carved into rocks stretch here. The urban landscape has been preserved in its original form: you will hear about the past and present of Matera and feel the spirit of antiquity. You will learn about local life, uncover the secrets of this colorful village, and understand why it is called the second Bethlehem.
What to Expect
Cultural Capital of 2019
We will explore the Sassi district – the oldest part of the city. The history of this unique place dates back to the Paleolithic era. I will tell you about the challenges faced by the local settlers, reclaiming their place under the sun. I will explain why this district, now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was recently considered a shame of the country. And why, in reality, the inhabitants were proud of their cave dwellings.
Life in the Caves
You will peek into some of the abandoned houses, learn when and why they were deserted, and unravel their mysteries. In a house-museum, where the setting of a modern cave dwelling is recreated, you will hear about the peasants' way of life. Visit the rock-hewn church from the Middle Ages: these walls often harbored monks fleeing persecution – there are many other similar churches in the city with interesting Byzantine frescoes. Ancient Matera and its modern bustling life – you will be amazed at how intricately the past and present are intertwined in this city.
