About this experience
The places of Russian emigration in Shanghai are a very personal story for me, closely related to the 20 years of my family's life in China. I will take you through quiet streets where Russian speech was heard and lively trade was carried out in the shops on 'Nevsky Avenue'. I will tell you about personal meetings with elderly Russian emigrants, their special language-surzhik. And we will also peek into the courtyards of communal apartments and vintage entrances to shikumen.
What to expect
This is a walk for those who are not satisfied with descriptions in guidebooks and standard tourist spots. I will show you an unusual perspective of the history of the huge Chinese metropolis in the most atmospheric part of the city.
You will see
- Luxurious European villas, which now house communal apartments - we will definitely visit some of them
- Vintage hotels and foreign clubs reminiscent of the golden age of jazz orchestras of Oleg Lundstrom and Serge Ermola
- The most unusual modern temple-bookstore in high-tech style
- Examples of art-deco architecture and the heritage of Russian architects.
You will learn
- How refugees from Primorye ended up in Shanghai and why they stayed here for almost three decades
- How the 'French' street became 'Russian'
- How two stone Orthodox churches appeared in the city
- Where did the emigrants disappear to after 1949
