About this experience
Are you tired of the 'luxurious' views of Old Riga and the glamorous Jugend style of Alberta Street? Designer boutiques and restaurants with author's cuisine? Looking for something more authentic? This walk will introduce you to Moscow Forshtadt - a historical area where Russians, Gypsies, and Jews lived in Riga. I love this district for its colorful atmosphere and the fact that every time I discover something new here. For example, an extraordinary icon or a pancake shop run by almost kids - students of the technical university, or a store selling Soviet souvenirs.
Forshtadt
Russian merchants, who came to trade in Riga, settled in front of the Castle along with their servants. Jewish craftsmen were allowed into the Castle during the day, and at night they returned to their large families. And, of course, the Gypsies settled where it was lively and festive. Moreover, Latvians were not very welcome in the German Riga either. This is how a multinational community was formed, restless but friendly.
And it still goes on, as it can. Churches of four denominations and a flea market, the skyscraper of the Academy of Sciences with the best view of the city and the coolest Central Market in the world. Semi-criminal inhabitants and an overnight stay, as an example of modern architecture. Small shops and an art gallery. Freshly polished embankment - an advertising project of the Riga City Council.
'Maskachka' - a district with a complex character, not for everyone. But it will be memorable. It will show you merchant mansions behind high fences, an Old Believer church, and a Catholic seminary. It will whisper about celebrities who walked in local taverns. It will treat you to a simple, uncomplicated Soviet-style pie or pastries from a secret pastry shop 'for insiders'. And what characters there are here!
