About this experience
Blue domes, painted mosaics, and majolica - of course, all these are integral elements of the ancient city. But does it have nothing else to surprise its guests? It does! I will show you the 'pearl of the East' from a different perspective. I will take you through the streets of Russian Samarkand. Let's remember how this area emerged and talk about how the local residents live now.
What to Expect
- University Boulevard - a favorite walking place for Samarkand locals. Let's walk through the alleys and see the building of the former Russian-Chinese bank built in 1895.
- TSUM 'Bakhor' - impressive, late Soviet-style with a logo that can easily be mistaken for a coat of arms.
- Registan Hotel - designed in constructivist style in the 20-30s of the 20th century when the city was the capital of the Uzbek SSR.
- Low-rise houses along Mustakillik Street with towers typical of Russian Samarkand architecture.
- 'Star of the East' Cinema. Another name - 'Shark Yulduzi', popularly known as 'Ball' also appeared during the five 'capital' years.
- Abram Kalantarov Palace - the largest mansion in the city, built in honor of Nicholas II's unrealized visit. It occupies a whole block. Next to it - a local history museum, where we will definitely visit.
- Ulugbek Avenue, somewhat similar to Tverskaya Street in Moscow.
- Pokrovsky Church, spacious and well-maintained. The relics of the church are embroidered icons. The parishioners of the church are mainly Russians.
We will talk about:
- the history of the emergence of Russian Samarkand
- changes in the mentality and life of people
- life in Uzbek mahallas
- traditions and customs of Uzbekistan
- modern Samarkand residents: how they live and earn a living
