About this experience
For those who want to discover the best corners of Porto, I invite you to stroll from its beautiful square to the port wine cellars of the town of Vila Nova de Gaia on the other side of the Douro river. We will examine the azulejo panels at Sao Bento train station, wander through the labyrinthine alleys of the Ribeira district, and talk about the nuances of true port wine. And from the bridge over the river, you will be treated to an incredible view of the colorful facades along Porto's waterfront and the endless red rooftops of the port wine cellars.
What to Expect
Twisting alleys of old Porto
Our walk will begin in the bourgeois quarter, not far from the Liberty Square, framed by the magnificent facades of the central town hall, bank, main hotel of Porto, and other historic buildings. Then we will stroll to one of the most beautiful train stations in the world - Sao Bento, adorned inside with paintings and azulejo tile panels. Through the images on the tiles, adults and children will become acquainted with the history and daily life of Portugal, and I will be happy to assist in this. You will visit the Gothic cathedral Se, which was once a fortress, and then, wandering through the labyrinthine narrow streets of the unique Ribeira quarter, we will descend to the waterfront - Porto's postcard with its colorful houses.
History of Port Wine in Vila Nova de Gaia
Crossing the bridge over the Douro, you will find yourself in Vila Nova de Gaia - the birthplace of Portugal's most famous drink. By law, only port wine produced in this town has the right to be called as such. You will see the cellars where port wine is stored and bottled, old ships that merchants used to transport it, learn about the peculiarities and varieties of this drink, and hear legends about its origins. Along the way, we will talk a bit about the town of Vila Nova de Gaia, stroll along the waterfront, and observe local graffiti.
Breathtaking panorama from King Luiz I Bridge
From the cellars, if desired, we will ascend by cable car to the bridge's second level, where you will enjoy perhaps the best view of Porto and the Douro - the river and the city spread out below as if in the palm of your hand! There is also the former 16th-century monastery of Serra do Pilar, which played a significant role in the war against Napoleon, and the park where locals love to watch the sunset. Along the way, I will point out several interesting places in Porto that will be appealing to both parents and children.
