About this experience
Porto - the heart and soul of Portugal! One of the oldest cities in Europe and the northern capital of the country, the birthplace of port wine and the cradle of the Great Geographical Discoveries. The centuries-old historic center of Porto is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List; I invite you to take a walk through it and discover the cellars with Portuguese port wine!
What to expect
Waking up, we feel how the city air is filled with the aroma of coffee and the freshness of the ocean. By evening, the city sparkles with myriads of thousands of colorful lights. Porto is a city where you can feel the true spirit of the country; we invite you to experience it personally!
During our tour, you will get acquainted with the main architectural and historical landmarks of the old center. We will not only see architectural monuments but also peek 'behind the scenes' by walking through some residential neighborhoods of the city. Our route will start with a visit to the Carmo and Carmelitas churches, which impress with their gilded interiors. We will definitely make a stop near the bookshop 'Livraria Lello' with its stunning architecture and rich interior finishing, known as the library of Harry Potter books. Leaving the bookshop, we will head to the Clérigos Tower, which is one of the city's symbols and has been astonishing with its monumentality and beauty for over 250 years.
Continuing our route, we will descend to the Freedom Square, which is the heart of the historical center, where King Pedro IV proudly sits on horseback, calling on the people to fight for their rights and freedom. To make our tour even more memorable, it is essential to visit the Saint Benedict Railway Station, which has entered the list of the most beautiful train stations in the world thanks to its magnificent tile panels known as 'azulejos'.
A stone's throw from the station is the oldest district in Porto - 'Mouraria' and the 11th-century Cathedral - a symbol of the piety of the townspeople. After admiring the stunning panorama of the old town from there, we will head to the central square, where the monument to Henry the Navigator is located, alongside the grand Stock Exchange Palace and the Church of Saint Francis.
After getting acquainted with the historical center of Porto, strolling along the famous 14th-century 'Ribeira' riverside promenade, from the shores of which the first caravels set off to discover new lands, we will head to the other bank of the Douro River, to the city of Vila Nova de Gaia, where a large number of wine cellars are located along the waterfront, housing the famous port wines. During the visit to the cellars, you will learn about the history of port wine's origin and production traditions. After the 'theoretical' part, you will be treated to a tasting of three categories of wines, so that you can appreciate the extraordinary bouquet of taste and aroma of each and understand their differences. You will develop your tasting skills and may fall in love with port wines.
Concluding the tour, we can take a leisurely cruise on traditional boats along the Douro River, during which you will have the opportunity to admire the magnificent bridges of Porto, including the creation of Gustave Eiffel. From the river, a completely different, mesmerizing view of the city opens up.
We will provide recommendations on restaurants and delicious dishes, shopping, as well as help plan the remainder of the day for independent exploration.
