About this experience
Almost every city has its own face: white stone facades, wide avenues, unusual balconies... Palermo does not have a single face. Its history is so complex and tangled that at first glance it seems as if everything has merged in this city: villas of Roman patricians and massive buildings of Mussolini, Christian churches with Arab domes, luxurious palaces of local nobility and narrow alleys with drying laundry, where time has stopped at an undefined moment in history. In one day, you will explore the various corners of the city and gain a comprehensive understanding of the heart of Sicily.
What to expect
Must-see places in Palermo
Palermo is a city inside out, carefully hiding its treasures behind shabby walls and inconspicuous doorways. During our city walk, I will tell you fascinating stories about its most famous landmarks - the Cathedral, the Royal Palace and the Palatine Chapel, the Quattro Canti square and the Fountain of Shame, as well as show hidden not-so-modest oratories and churches, luxurious aristocratic palaces and austere monasteries where nuns concocted recipes of sweets that brought fame to Sicily around the world.
Local market vibes
You will visit one of the unique city markets, where vendors loudly shout "abbaniate", luring customers to their stalls with a picturesque display of vegetables, fruits, giant swordfish, and various sea creatures. For the people of Palermo, a trip to the market is not just a domestic routine, but an opportunity to meet friends, discuss the latest news, and eat something delicious. Spleen sandwiches, lentil patties, potato croquettes, and rice arancini are just a partial list of street food menu that Palermo is famous for. I will tell you about the most delicious, strange, and even shocking dishes... and let's see who dares to try something from it!
Underground cemetery - an important part of the city's history (optional)
A visit to Palermo would be incomplete without exploring the famous Capuchin Catacombs - a unique underground cemetery where, in addition to church officials, the most prominent residents of the city found their final rest: aristocrats, doctors, architects, as well as their wives and little children. I must say, it's not for the faint-hearted, but it's worth a visit - I will tell you about the strange traditions associated with this place, legends, and real-life stories of these people... because many of them made Palermo the way we see it today. Please note that a visit to the Catacombs is an additional option and must be arranged in advance.
