About this experience
One of the most picturesque views of the Tyrrhenian Sea opens from Cefalù - a Sicilian town with a history dating back to the 6th century BC. The island has been ruled by various peoples at different times. However, on the tour, we will not delve too deeply into the events of the past. My task is to show you alongside the main attractions the hidden alleyways and courtyards, where you will observe the leisurely life of the locals and hear local legends.
What to expect
History and Legends of Cefalù
This land remembers the times of worship of the goddess Diana, Roman rule, the power of Christian Byzantium, and Arab dominance. Just imagine how many different peoples and civilizations have left their mark on the island! During the walk, I will draw your attention to the objects that have preserved echoes of bygone eras. And by straying a bit from the beaten paths, you will find yourself in courtyards (with their legends and stories), where the daily life of the locals will unfold before you.
Must-see places
You will visit the magnificent cathedral - a superb example of Sicilian architecture in the Arab-Norman style with beautiful facades and mosaics made by craftsmen from Constantinople. You will encounter a spring of water, considered the purest and coldest in Sicily, and hear a romantic legend about the stream. You will stroll along the defensive wall, ascend to the bastions, and also see the historic palace where the King of Sicily often stayed, noble families lived, and even Dominican monks.
Ascent to La Rocca Mountain (additional option)
At the top of the mountain are the ruins of the temple of Diana - the oldest evidence of the first civilization on the island - and a medieval castle. Climbing here is definitely worth it for the fantastic views - from the platform, you will enjoy a panorama of the Sicilian coast and the historical center of Cefalù, and on clear days, you can see the Aeolian Islands! By prior arrangement, we can hike up the mountain, the journey takes 20-30 minutes to the first viewpoint and 40 minutes to the castle.
