About this experience
Japan is in the top 3 countries for life expectancy. What is the secret, and is it all about the diet? Let's find the answers in a city located 70 km from Tokyo. You will learn about medieval 'supplements' for shoguns and remedies in a shop where pharmacists have been working for 26 generations. And at a secluded temple, I will tell you about what the Japanese believe in and how it is related to longevity. The tour starts and ends in Odawara.
What to Expect
Ancient Apothecary Shop
In the early Middle Ages, there were no modern medicines or supplements. So who did the rulers of Japan turn to for healing elixirs?
We will meet at Odawara station and start at a place within walking distance. I will take you to an apothecary shop where pharmacists have been working for 26 generations. Just imagine: this place has been open since the 13th century when Japan was ruled by shoguns and their deputies, and the emperor resided exclusively in Kyoto, rarely leaving the capital.
In a small family museum, you will see antique photographs and tools. You will appreciate the authentic construction and interior elements. You will learn the composition of remedies for medieval military commanders. I will also share some interesting stories – for example, how and who helped a kabuki theater actor in our time to solve voice problems.
Japanese Connection with Nature
A taxi will pick us up at the designated time, and half an hour later we will find ourselves at the foot of a mountain temple in the silence of Japanese countryside. Here, I will share my understanding of the Japanese connection with nature, as well as with countless spirits and deities. It is believed that they are an integral part of the surrounding world and can help humans.
I will talk about deities and wandering early-Buddhist hermits-yamabushi. In good dry weather, we will climb the temple steps to its main pavilions at the mountaintop. If not, we will taste local delicacies in other shops on the way back – many of them are also beneficial.
So, what about sushi with sake?
By the end of the walk, you will understand what gives the Japanese longevity and how they feel like a part of nature. From this moment on, you will probably be amused by the clichés and stereotypes of foreign journalists like 'sushi with sake – the secret of Japanese nation's longevity'.
If you want to have a meal after the tour, I will suggest where to buy a hiking lunch at Odawara station or which establishments should still be open.
