About this experience
Venice is known as an 'open-air museum', besides its Renaissance and Baroque heritage, the city boasts examples of modern art. From May to November, the Art Biennale takes place here: together with me, you will visit private palaces and churches that are usually closed to the public, and see works by outstanding masters from around the world. I will help you understand the stylistic directions, 'read' the author's concept, and understand why modern art is valued.
What to Expect
Introduction to the art world
The excursion program depends on your preferences. However, a must-see on the list is the Peggy Guggenheim Museum, one of the main collectors and patrons of the 20th century. I will tell you about her life, friendships with Marcel Duchamp and Jackson Pollock, how she started collecting art, and how she opened her home for visits as a museum. You will hear about the major works in her collection: pieces by Picasso, Kandinsky, Dali, Mondrian, and many others.
Unusual works and their authors
After discussing the main art movements, we will visit the pavilions of the parallel Biennale program. I will explain what it is, how the exhibition started, how it is structured, how artists are selected, and how prices for works are determined.
We will visit at least three locations of your choice. At the exhibition of Mexican artist Bosco Sodi, you will be amazed at how modern art blends with antique interiors. At the Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista, examine the hovering installations by Ugo Rondinone. I will also tell you how 'Arte Povera' became one of the most expensive movements in the art market, and guide you through a conservatory filled with works by young promising artists.
The tour can be extended to visit the Kazakhstan Pavilion - participating in the Biennale for the first time, their performances have already made a lot of noise in Venice. Or take a ride to the island of San Giorgio Maggiore and see the works of the fashionable artist Kehinde Wiley, located in the famous church.
In addition to engaging conversations and visits to exhibitions, I will also provide valuable advice on other exhibitions to visit in your free time.
