About this experience
I invite you to an amazing journey along the Romantic Road of Germany, to the world of real medieval times! Together we will visit the magical medieval towns of Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Nördlingen. I will share stories of how people lived and worked here in earlier eras, help you understand architectural styles, show you the most memorable half-timbered houses, and walk along the fortress wall.
What to expect
Rothenburg ob der Tauber
We will visit the most remarkable buildings, talk about their significance, and explore charming corners that seem to be the perfect decoration for your photos! The route will include the following places:
- Plönlein - one of the most beautiful places in medieval Germany and an embodiment of coziness, warmth, and beauty. It is in such places that the heroes of German fairy tales lived.
- Town Hall, located on Market Square and continues to play a central role in urban governance since the 13th century. This is one of the most significant buildings in the cities along the Romantic Road!
- Tavern of the Councilors - a special place where you will learn the famous legend of the city's miraculous rescue and see how the clock doors open to start the performance of a magical drink.
- Church of St. Jacob, where the "Holy Blood" altar by the genius sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider is located. You will see the relic brought to Rothenburg by the crusaders in the 12th century, and learn about the master's unusual decision in creating the altar.
- Fountain of St. George - a deep and beautiful well adorned with charming decorative elements. Here we will discuss the water problem for a medieval city and what the city authorities did to solve it.
- Christmas Village Käthe Wohlfart, where the holiday and fairy-tale atmosphere of Christmas lasts all year round. I will tell you about Christmas traditions in Germany: what Advent is, the festive wreath, and the sweet calendar.
We will have lunch at a lovely restaurant, where you will try authentic Franconian cuisine, as the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire used to recruit their chefs from the city of Rothenburg:)
Nördlingen
A town located in the world's most studied meteorite crater. Founded by ancient Romans and turned into a medieval city of "international" importance.
Tanners' Houses. This district in Nördlingen is one of the largest areas of tanners' houses preserved in Germany. You will see authentically designed half-timbered houses with a unique layout, as housing and production were located under one roof.
Dancing House. Balls were held here in the past. Today, the most important and respected inhabitants of the house are storks living on the roof. They are under the city's care and receive their "pension."
Cathedral of St. George with a 90-meter tower named "Daniel", from where the watchman shouts an unusual phrase every day, recalling a wonderful legend and seemingly confirming that history and traditions in this medieval town will live forever.
