What to Expect
A Complete Overview of Madrid's History
You will learn about and see the part of history that chroniclers of the 16th and 17th centuries tried so hard to conceal. But archaeological finds and evidence will reveal the truth. I will tell you how the union of the Trastamara and Habsburg dynasties gave birth to a powerful Spain that ruled over half of Europe and revealed America to the world. And why Madrid became the capital of this great empire, when the choice was between such worthy contenders as Seville, Granada, Toledo, Valladolid, or Barcelona. You will see how the Bourbon dynasty changed Madrid's appearance, giving it a truly royal splendor and magnificence typical of the European capitals of that time.
Squares of the Capital
The tour will begin at Plaza Mayor. You will learn about its 400-year history, which witnessed bullfights and 'autos-da-fe' with the burning of heretics. At Arch of Cutlers Square, I will explain the principles behind the names of the streets surrounding Plaza Mayor. And on Cutlers and Cabal Street, which were once part of Madrid's fortress wall, you will immerse yourself in the city’s life during the late Middle Ages. You will hear about daily life, the politics of inns, and local drinking establishments. The main square of medieval Madrid - La Plaza de la Paja - will introduce you to the architecture of the Spanish Renaissance with its secret feature - the Andalusian-style garden of the Prince Anglona and the no less secret former covered walkway between the Lasso Palace and the bishopric. This will be an opportunity to talk about some details from the lives of kings and the concept of Spain's 'capital' before Madrid. And near the oldest architectural complex in Madrid - La plaza de la Villa - you will learn about the cardinals and their role in the state, about Alvaro de Basan and his valiant role in the state under Philip II.
Royal Palaces and Ancient Fortress Walls
At the walls of the Palace of the Duke of Lerma, I will tell you about Philip III and his right-hand man - the Duke of Lerma, about the capital's move to Valladolid and back, and what it meant for the duke. As you inspect the Arab fortress wall, you will hear why Madrid is called a city 'on water with walls of fire.' We will talk about Alfonso VI, his conquests, the real relations between Christians and Muslims during the Reconquista, the miracles, the statue of Mary Almudena, and the Christianization of Muslim society in general. You will tour the Royal Palace and learn about the significance of the Spanish flag. We will not ignore the Alcazar, the Bourbon's accession to power, the fire, and the peculiarities of the new royal palace. And also the royal family in the present day and the locals' attitude toward the monarchy.
Churches' Architecture and History
Using the example of Basilica de San Miguel, I will explain the transition in styles from Spanish Herreriano and Plateresque to Baroque. You will become acquainted with the history of the Almudena Cathedral and its interior. And you will visit the burial crypt and learn about the conditions required to rest there after death. At the church of San Andrés, I will tell you about St. Isidore, the patron saint of Madrid, his fascinating life, and even more fascinating afterlife! About his healing journeys across the country, the strange customs of bygone eras, and the miracles associated with water.
Other Highlights of Madrid
Next to the opera theater - once the largest stage in Europe - I will provide a detailed account of the construction challenges, the incredible foundation extending 6 stories underground, and the unique acoustics of the stage. Strolling down Calle Escalinata, you will discover an untouched area where I will show you a preserved piece of Madrid's first Christian wall with its Mudéjar-style brick arches. At Plaza de Herradores, I will talk about the vintage Madrid taxis and their influence on the appearance of the steps at the entrances to the wealthy homes. And Mercado de San Miguel will serve as the final stop on the route, where we will wrap up the tour in true Spanish style: with a small tasting of local wines paired with interesting snacks.
